Training session 1
Amphetamines, Polydrug Use and the New Party Drugs
According to the United Nations 2009 World Drug Report, amphetamines use accounts for 22 per cent of all treatment drug dependency in Australia. In addition to using amphetamines there are emerging new trends in polydrug use and new types of party drugs.
This training session will develop the capacity of frontline staff who have contact with people who use Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS) to:
- Better respond to the needs of clients
- Provide early brief interventions; and
- Provide referral to support services
At the end of the session, participants will have:
- Improved knowledge of ATS, poly drug use, and new types of party drugs
- Improved knowledge and understanding of the potential harms associated with ATS and polydrug use
- Improved knowledge of, and confidence in providing, strategies to reduce harms associated with ATS use
- Improved skills and confidence to work effectively with people who use ATS

Training session 2
Keeping Mum and Baby Happy and Healthy: working with pregnant women and new mothers who use illicit drugs.
In 2009 Anex produced a booklet titled Keeping Mum and Baby Happy and Healthy. The booklet was designed for women and couples who are using drugs and are pregnant. The booklet was developed in consultation with women and men who were using drugs during pregnancy and early parenting and health professionals such as midwives who work with people who use drugs.
This training session will
- provide background to the production of the booklet,
- identify and discuss issues related to working with and supporting women and couples who are pregnant and using drugs, and
- outline strategies for ensuring they are supported with good information, access to appropriate services and opportunities to make informed choices about their health and the health of their children.
At the end of the session, participants will have:
- Improved understanding of the major issues for women and couples who use drugs and are pregnant or parenting
- The ability to identify the barriers to access to antenatal information and care when using drugs and understanding of how they can be addressed
- Improved knowledge of the key elements to comprehensive ante natal and post natal care for women using drugs
- Improved understanding of innovative strategies to ensure a healthy pregnancy when a woman or couple is using drugs, and
- The ability to use the booklet in case planning, management and support of clients who are pregnant and using drugs.
